The square momentarily disappears when you are in a command that asks you to select points. It tells you that you can select objects, even while the command prompt appears at the bottom of the screen and no command is currently active. This square is actually a pick box superimposed on the cursor. You have seen that when AutoCAD is waiting for a command, it displays the cross hair cursor with the small square. The next set of exercises shows you how to use the Noun/Verb method in AutoCAD. This method requires you to select objects before you issue a command to edit them. Nearly all graphics programs today have tacitly acknowledged the Noun/Verb method for selecting objects.
